December Leadership Lessonš”: "Be decisive, take an action, Be Bold and move forward"
The worst thing a leader can do is to overthink at the time of uncertainty. Data is not available all the time, you may not have all the inputs you want to make a decision. This is the time, you go with your instincts and make the decision but do have a an "anchor" on why you made that decision. This is why I really love Amazon's "Bias for Action" leadership principle, it facilitates bold, faster and efficient decision making.
Some Examples:
Q: "I don't know if there is enough data point to confirm if this features drives user growth which it was supposed to, should we launch it still? -
Ans: If this is the right thing for the user, lest do it.
Q: "Should we invest in code quality this half, i don't see a returns from it in terms of metric?"
Ans: This is the right thing for our tech debt, let's do it.
Q: If we shut down this product, we cannot bring it back next time?
Ans: I know that, let's still do it as it helps us to focus.
What if I am wrong?
If you are wrong, you will learn from it and get better at it next time. If you don't take a call the team/teams will be stuck in a limbo - overanalyzing the data or spending hours to make a case which helps none.
Try it next time when you are in a situation like this or share if you have done this before (we can all learn from each other)!
